Support for Construction of a New Library Facility by 2032 Dear Town Board Members:
The Webster Public Library Board of Trustees respectfully supports planning for the construction of a new library facility by 2032 following the expiration of the current lease.
A purpose-built library would provide the greatest opportunity to meet the community's long-term needs. Unlike a leased or adapted facility, a new building can be designed specifically to support modern library services, flexible community spaces, evolving technology, accessibility, sustainability, and future growth. That flexibility allows for the potential population growth that Webster is planning for over the next 20 years.
A new library would create a lasting civic asset that reflects Webster's aspirations for future generations. Public library buildings are among the most enduring pieces of community infrastructure, with the average library in New York remaining in service for approximately 75 years. That longevity means residents could continue benefiting from this investment for decades after construction costs have been paid, making it an investment not only in a building, but in the long-term educational, cultural, and civic vitality of the community. By beginning the planning process now, the Library and Town can thoughtfully evaluate sites, funding opportunities, community priorities, and design options to maximize the value of that investment.
The Board recognizes that new construction represents the most significant financial investment among the available options. It also offers the greatest ability to align the facility with future service needs rather than adapting existing space to fit them. With careful planning and broad community engagement, a new library will serve as a central destination for learning, collaboration, and community connection for generations.
The Board appreciates the Town Board's consideration of this option and looks forward to continued collaboration as plans for the future of library service in Webster are developed.
Sincerely,
(Ploeg
