Why are we here? • Any physical project must undergo environmental review • One entity, the lead agency, must make a determination of significance • This determines whether the action is likely to have a significant adverse environmental impact and whether additional study is therefore needed

Two Potential Outcomes

NEGATIVE DECLARATION

POSITIVE DECLARATION

• Action will not result in a significant adverse environmental impact

• Action may result in a significant adverse environmental impact

• No additional study needed

• Additional study through Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is required

• Reasoning for determination is documented in writing

Types of Actions Type

Description

Type of Environmental Assessment Form (EAF)

Type II

Actions that have already been determined not to have significant impact.

None

None

None

Unlisted

Actions that do not meet state and local thresholds for Type I actions, but are not exempt from review.

Short Form EAF

Coordinated or Uncoordinated

Requires EIS if potential impacts found

Type I

Actions that are more likely to have significant adverse impacts. They meet or exceed certain thresholds.

Long Form EAF

Coordinated

Requires EIS if potential impacts found

Type of Review

Environmental Impact Statement Required?

Why is this a Type I Action? Is it within or next to a park? YES

Does it physically alter 2.5 acres? YES TYPE I

NO

Does it physically alter 10 acres?

NO UNLISTED

YES TYPE I

NO UNLISTED

Involved Agencies A key difference between Unlisted Actions and Type I Actions is the need to conduct a coordinated review. Because of the number of approvals this project involves, we would be doing a coordinated review either way.
